How to reduce digital eye strain in children

  1. Use the 20-20-20 rule


  • Every 20 min take a 20 sec break and look at something 20 metres away.


  • This can be achieved by:

    • Encouraging older children to take regular breaks and

    • Using timers for younger children.




  1. Use the “Elbow” rule




  • Any digital devices should be held no closer than an elbow’s distance away from the eyes.




  1. Consider lighting



  • Ensure good lighting when children are using screens.


  • Dim or poor lighting can cause more pressure on their visual system which can lead to eye strain.




  1. Encourage outdoor time

  • Balance age-appropriate screen time with physical activity and outdoor time.


  • Outdoor time has also been found to lower the risk of the development and progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in children.
